I never knew that can happen! I’m going to chew my steak more slowly from now on!

So just for some context, I actually have something wrong with my esophagus. I have to go back in a few weeks for a endoscopy.

I had the same about 18 years ago. It’s an interesting circumstance being able to breathe but not swallow anything.

Oh my god this happened to me six months ago!
Nowhere near this bad, though, apparently. I was able to clear it by freaking out for a half hour followed by swallowing a few mouthfuls of water as hard as I could.

I’ve seen a few people die from aspirating on food in our ER/ICU
The worst one was mashed potatoes since the left lung was essentially full of mash and they were difficult to intubate in the field so they ended up with an anoxic brain injury from the asphyxiation.Â

You could have EoE, I’ve been diagnosed and have had issues swallowing red meat in the past.
Could be something to ask your doctor about!

You most likely have a [Schatzki ring](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schatzki_ring). This is a band of hard tissue that forms in the esophagus and can occasionally block swallowing. I have one of those. The ring is usually inflamed from acid reflux, so I take Famatodine daily to keep that under control. I also have the ring surgically tretched about once every five years or so.

Did you finish eating it after they removed it to not be wasteful?

This happened to me several times, usually with chicken (but has also happened with spaghetti and with ravioli of all things). It has gone down without intervention so far, but drinking a carbonated beverage helped some times. It’s one of the worst feelings; you have an urge to cough it up but can’t, and only cough up the cold water you just swallowed trying to force it down.
I had a barium study done where I drank this bland liquid and they watched it on X-ray go down. They didnt find any issue anatomically until as a last thought, they had me swallow a small pill to watch that. They saw it get stuck on a tighting section of the esophagus, like a Schatzki ring. Next step for me would be an esophageal dilation, but haven’t gotten to that point yet.
Chewing food very well and managing GERD symptoms are the best defense, unless you need more serious help like dilation or a prescription. Best of luck.

Had something similar happen, but with a huge wad of chia seeds. Fucking sucked.
From the thumbnail, my 1st thought was that it was a turd in a dirty toilet.

I had a big chunk of steak stuck for about an 1/2hr until I swallowed a big gulp of water. Have had GERD ever since.

Had this happen to me intensely for a couple months. This post reminded me I havent had this issue in a while.
Went to the er and doctor said drink soda (the carbonation helps break down the food) and to jump and land on your heels.
I still would throw up and heave the soda and anything i drank to try to get it down so really just takes time. Horrible pain in the chest that puts you in an anxiety induced state and just stressful all around.

You know, hypothetically if they had to remove it because you shoved it too far up your butt you’d get a similar photo from the experience.

I assume endoscopically removed, not surgically.

The timing of this could not be worse for me.
I’ve just had surgery to **tighten** my lower esophageal sphincter.
I’ve gone weeks on full liquid diet and then weeks on soft food…
I **was** looking forward to graduating to solid food soon. lol

Why is everything deleted?
This first happened to me when I was 26, had to have a piece of lamb removed, again at 28 and 29 before being diagnosed with an autoimmune – Eosinophilic esophagitis. There really is no fear I’ve felt then a piece of steak being hugged by your esophagus and sealing around it, while being able to talk and breathe, everyone you swallow it builds up until you throw it up. It happened on the second date with my now fiancé, I told her to just sleep in my bed while I drove myself to the hospital during COVID to have it removed, I got home and she was still there and so happy to see me. I knew she was the one at that point. I had to change a lot of my habits and diet, it’s been under control for the past couple years, which I’m happy to report.
You should mark this NSFW. I mean, c’mon.
Either that is steak or Cartman was 100% correct.
